Fungal nail infections

Fungal nails are common, especially on the Gold Coast, and cause nails to thicken, discolour or breakdown. They can present in many ways, but have one thing in common – if left untreated, fungal nail infections can be painful and can even cause bad odour. That’s why it’s important to consult an experienced podiatrist as soon as possible.

At Mudgeeraba Podiatry before we embark on any nail fungal treatment, we can test in-house if your nail is fungal or just a damaged nail. If your nail is fungal our podiatrist will discuss with you treatment options. Treatment may include topical, oral or our PACT Fungal Nail Treatment combined with Laser therapy.

Symptoms of Fungal Nail Infections include:

  • dry, thickened nails
  • lifting or flaking nails
  • nail discolouration
  • ridges on the nail
  • bad odour.

Yes, fungal nail infections can be contagious. As the fungi thrives in moist areas, ensure all showers and bathrooms are clean after use to avoid spreading the infection. Wash socks with a bacterial wash, separate from other laundry.

Our podiatrists treat every fungal infection on a case-by-case basis. Some fungal nail treatments include laser therapy, oral medication and topical medication.
